With over 20 albums and 10 years worth of music to choose from, picking what to play at a King Gizz show is challenging, to say the least. But frontman Stu Mackenzie has - fittingly - a meticulous but slightly unhinged system.
"We have a big excel spreadsheet. Stu has really upped his game in terms of cataloguing everything," Joey explained. "A huge spreadsheet with all the albums split up."
"Stu uses this website
setlist.fm, which documents every single show we’ve played. He constantly goes on there,
‘What song have we not played in a while?’ and draws from the inventory."
The spreadsheet as necessary to reinforce a recently introduced pledge to never repeat the same setlist. "It’s so annoying sometimes," Joey continued.
"We’ll be in the thick of the absolute dregs of a tour and we’re like, '
Can’t we just have an easy one?’ We’ll see the setlist Stu's made and there’s a song we’ve never played before we have to learn that day."
"He says '
Nah, trust me, you’ll be happy we did it'. Inevitably at the end of the show, it's true. We're glad we did that, and we become a better band every time."
Ambrose estimates that "In 2019 we did 60-something songs, but already this year we've played over 80 or something from our catalogue."
