Le Guess Who? maakt eerste honderd namen en gastcuratoren bekend​

O.a. The Congos, SUNN O))), M(h)aol, YHWH Nailgun en Lido Pimienta​

Le Guess Who? heeft de eerste honderd namen en gastcuratoren bekendgemaakt. Ook dit jaar staat het fijnproeversfestival weer garant voor unieke muziek uit alle denkbare windstreken.

Een paar interessante namen uit het lijstje met curators: de Zuid-Afrikaanse drummer en cultureel werker Asher Gamedze stelt een programma samen waarin de rijkdom van de muzikale gemeenschap in Kaapstad wordt gevierd. De Colombiaanse dj/producer Edna Martinez presenteert een reis naar de wereld van PICÓ, een Colombiaans-Caribische kunstvorm die ontstond op straatfeesten in de jaren ‘50. En de Hong Kongse producer gyrofield – die onlangs in Utrecht kwam wonen – host een podium waar o.a. Objekt tussen de genodigden staat.

Zelf nodigt Le Guess Who? natuurlijk ook een hoop artiesten uit. Lido Pimienta brengt haar geweldige spaanstalige orkestplaat La Belleza naarUtrecht, de Ierse postpunkers van M(h)aol zijn van de partij, en de legendarische reggaegroep The Congos neemt je mee naar Kingston in de jaren ‘70. En de Brooklynse noiserockers van YHWH Nailgun mogen laten zien dat ze zelfs op Le Guess Who? voor wat opgetrokken wenkbrauwen kunnen zorgen.

The Fiery Furnaces en PRAM zijn een verrassing van jewelste! En Valentina Magaletti is een uitstekende keuze als curator. Ben fan van haar projecten. Verder staan er heel wat dingen in die ik de komende weken van plan was om te zien op Les Nuits Botanique en Palmarium, maar dan kan ik ze dubbel zien of de vele andere artiesten checken.

Kan niet wachten om verder in de line-up te duiken.

Hé, Lonnie Holley, dat is nog eens leuk!

Uiteraard weer veel onbekends, maar al best veel moois: One Leg One Eye, Ahmed, Nicolaas Jaar, Big Brave, Ale Hop, Divide and Dissolve, Julianna Barwick (ook met Mary Lattimore), Kathryn Mohr, M(h)aol, Rogê, Uwound, YHWH Nailgun, Li Jianhong, ZAÄAR en Tristwch y Fenywod. Vergeet uiteraard nog wat. Attila Csihar & Iggor Cavalera is ook wel een bijzondere, niet gedacht dat we die laatste ooit op LGW? zouden zien.

Jammer van Africa Express, maar wie weet komt dat nog?

best veel overlap met roadburn wat mooi de wisselwerking tussen beide festivals laat zien. Fenywod en one leg waren tof dit jaar, big brave altijd erg goed en M(h)oal was goed toen ik ze zag zondag.

Fiery Furnaces tour is niet compleet onverwacht, ze hebben weer wat live shows gedaan in amerika, maar wel onzettend tof. Unieke band en live erg goed. Emptyset als die een live set doen ook erg tof, YHWN nieuwe is erg goed en PHEW toen gemist op rewire dus mogelijk een nieuwe goedmaker ook al wordt het grote kans toch Sonic City en mogelijk een dagje LGW voor mij dit jaar. Van de andere curactors ken ik ook niet heel veel maar tof om namen uit het verleden toen ik wat meer uptodate was met techno als Goth-Trad en Objekt naar voren te zien te komen. Voice Actor is ook wel een erg toffe boeking, zelfde voor able noise.

Wat mij persoonlijk het meeste opvalt is toch wel Pram; echt een beetje een vergeten band die toch wat prachtige platen heeft gemaakt vol met een unieke mix van jaren 60 pop, ambient, dub, 'hauntology' geluiden en nog 2000 andere dingen. In gemakkelijke termen een beetje te omschrijven als de missende stap tussen Stereolab en Broadcast ook al zijn ze al langer bezig dan beide.

COSMOS is Le Guess Who?’s hybrid platform that highlights independent music scenes from around the world. Here we invite vibrant music communities from every corner of the map to become COSMOS Embassies, and to share their stories–both online and offline–through mixtapes, film, live radio, conversations and performances.

Each year, the Embassies present commissioned short documentaries about their local scenes. These films are screened at the festival as well as freely available online via leguesswho.com/cosmos. In addition, representatives of the Embassies attend Le Guess Who? to perform, host screenings and appear on panels and live radio broadcasts.

Following the announcement of the guest curators and initial line-up for Le Guess Who? 2025, we’re now proud to share the four COSMOS Embassies for 2025.

IDGK​

IDGK is an Istanbul-based music initiative documenting the city’s diverse alternative music scene. Since 2023, IDGK has produced numerous live performance videos in collaboration with local artists, bands, music communities, venues, animators and labels. The project focuses on representing individual voices that make up the underground culture of Istanbul, making space for creative expression for anyone willing to listen.

Seyðisfjörður Community Radio​

Seyðisfjörður Community Radio is a shared digital and analogue broadcasting platform located in Seyðisfjörður on the east-coast of Iceland. Hosted, nurtured and initiated by an open-ended international community inhabiting various conditions and positions, often somewhat distributed in various locations on the planetary surface. From these places and times they share, they inquire and they keep in touch - over the radio. “We send. We listen. We send. We listen”. The community of listeners and broadcasters morphs and changes with time.

River Down Records​

River Down Records is a label from Panama City dedicated to documenting and developing the creative sound of Panama. With over 15 digital releases, River Down Records has produced new works and supported artists with an already established vision, helping them expand their creativity and reach a wider audience. Inspired by the spirit of Río Abajo, River Down Records celebrates the rich culture that Panama has to offer.

ALIGN.ONLINE​

ALIGN.ONLINE is a Southeast Asian platform dedicated to cultural and sound innovation, with a focus on supporting women and the queer community in electronic music. Founded after Victoria Yam (aka rEmPiT g0dDe$$) was named the international winner of The Oram Awards in 2024, ALIGN.ONLINE builds on her commitment to advancing electronic music innovation in Southeast Asia. Alongside co-founder Lynn Nandar Htoo, ALIGN.ONLINE facilitates knowledge-sharing and skill development through electronic music production workshops to provide access to resources, mentorship and visibility. The platform serves as a catalyst for cultural and sound practitioners across the region.

This year, COSMOS continues its partnership with Berlin-based community radio Refuge Worldwide. Together, we present sounds and stories from around the globe, hand-picked by local artists. Listen here.

Om eerlijk te zijn, dat is onderdeel van je bedrijfsvoering als festival toch? Le Guess Who verkoopt bijna elk jaar uit, dan gaat er toch ergens financieel iets mis achter de schermen?

Verder is het nog onduidelijk of Africa Express komt. Utrecht in november stond even in hun tourschema, maar is nooit aangekondigd.

Vanwege Sonic City en de Pitchfork festivals is er voldoende indie-spul in de buurt (King Hannah op Sonic City bijvoorbeeld), maar LGW? haalt daar niet veel namen meer uit.

Sonic city heeft nog een wat namen die zelf confirmed zijn ook want die line-up is ook nog steeds niet compleet; pile, marrisa nadler. Yowie lijkt me wel een zekerheidje voor de Unwound dag ieder geval voor LGW
