Yes, jesting but I still think The Offspring were much more than essentially fun teenage cheesy pop punk. Graspop would have definitely veered away from them if needed. Like you wouldn't have chosen to put a band like Within Temptation below The Offspring.![]()
You surely understand my point.
The Offspring indeed started out as a fairly standard, serious punk band.
But with Smash, they already took a much more commercial direction.
Together with Green Day in particular, they were thereby the founders/precursors of pop punk.
With Americana, they even delivered a downright, defining pop-punk album, in the same period/wave as bands like Blink.
Blink-182 are/were the standard-bearers of pop punk.
The Offspring may not necessarily be pop punk (more like skate punk), but their album Americana (and to a lesser extent Smash) was definitely (also) pop punk.
And let's be honest: most people who stood at The Offspring's show at GMM this year weren't there to hear the songs from Ixnay on the Hombre, let alone from the very first albums.
Those same people will be there again if Blink-182 were to be the headliner.
That was an example of what they've done, even self esteem is much less pop wise than most of what Blink habe done.
If they are there I'll happily say fair enough.
